Observation Narrative
Plot positioned in a narrow but active floodplain along Kimberling Creek. This section has larger trees, and was not a cleared pasture in the recent past, as are most other parts of this floodplain nearby. The habitat was recently flooded to a depth of ca. 2 m, evidenced by flood debris deposited on branches of trees and shrubs. Topography of the plot is variable and includes high terraces / levees and a swale. Sampled relatively early in the growing season; herbaceous vegetation here will get much taller and denser as the season progresses.
0-10+ cm: sandy loam (on terraces) to rocky clay loam (in slough)
More recent alluvial deposits are sandy loam; more stable, low-lying soils are clay loams
